Loris Baz's hopes of building on a successful World Superbike season at the Nurburgring came to an abrupt end even before he had lined on the starting grid after a heavy crash in morning warm-up left him nursing a fractured vertebra.

The Frenchman had been on strong form all weekend, qualifying on the second row in fourth, but a fall coming into the NGK Chicane during morning warm-up would see him barrel through the gravel trap at high speed.

Taken to the local hospital with a suspected back injury, though Baz was confirmed as not suffering any neurological complications or a spinal injury, he has fractured his C2 vertebra and will remain in hospital for another 24 hours.
