Though his chances of winning the 2013 World Superbike Championship title appear relatively slim, Sylvain Guintoli still comes into the final race of the season with something to fight for in his attempts to finish ahead of team-mate Eugene Laverty.

Whilst Guintoli is still within range of series leader Tom Sykes at 38 points, things are more finely poised in the fight for the runners-up spot, with just a point separating the Aprilia Racing pair.

Qualifying on the second row in fifth position for the season finale, Guintoli will start the two races behind Laverty, but he is confident he has the race pace to be a contender for victory nonetheless.

"As always this was quite a heated Superpole and in the end I was about a tenth off compared to the front row. The positive thing is that in any case we found good base setting during the practice session to be fast even on used tyres. It's always better to start from the front, but the fifth spot isn't a total disaster. I just need to stay focused and maintain my pace in the races tomorrow."

Whatever happens, Guintoli will certainly end the 2013 season in a new career-best overall classification, even if he will still have to win both races at Jerez to simply match his feat of three victories from last year.
