Top 10 WSBK Rider of the Year 2013: 4. Chaz Davies

Following his eye-catching - and race winning - maiden season of World Superbike racing on a privateer Aprilia in 2012, it was little surprise that Chaz Davies was snapped up for a high profile BMW ride in 2013.

Having developed an evident affinity with the RSV4 in his first season of Superbike racing, an endeavour that famously peaked with a victory at the Nurburgring, hopes were high that Davies could eventually blossom into a fully-fledged title contender, even if he was to discover his budding relationship with BMW was doomed to be a shortlived one.

Though pre-season testing suggested the switch from Aprilia to BMW machinery would prove more of a challenge than he had expected, the Welshman was at least up to speed in time for the opening round of the season at Phillip Island.

Even so, few could have predicted his dominant turn during round two at Motorland Aragon, Davies reeling off a pair of commanding wins that demonstrated his potential on the BMW and even prompted murmurings in the paddock that Marco Melandri was perhaps not the only title contender in the team...

However, with the European leg of the season in full swing, Davies couldn't quite sustain his challenge and those murmurings had all but diminished by the time he returned to the podium at round eight in Russia, during a race he would have likely won had a late shower not forced him to pit for less favourable wet weather tyres.

Nonetheless, Davies would make one more trip to the top step before the year was out, his third success at the Nurburgring - which in turn gave BMW the historic home win it so badly craved on its final appearance - bringing him level with Melandri in terms of race wins.

Even so, amidst the flashes of speed, Davies would otherwise often find himself as the man just on the cusp of the 'big four', an impression reflected by his six podiums amongst a substantial tally of 17 top six finishes.

Nonetheless, it is easy to forget that 2013 represented only Davies's second year of Superbikes and his first season aboard an occasionally temperamental machine. It means 'best of the rest' is almost certainl too glib a comment to describe Davies's season, since three wins and an overall top five finish at this stage in his burgeoning Superbike career showcases a notable improvement on 2012.

Whether he can sustain that trajectory with his impending move to Ducati, however, remains to be seen...
