Tom Sykes receives coveted RAC Torrens Trophy

Tom Sykes is awarded the coveted RAC Torrens Trophy in recognition for his success in the 2013 World Superbike Championship.
World Superbike Champion Tom Sykes has added another prestigious title to his repertoire after becoming only the seventh recipient of the esteemed RAC Torrens Trophy in more than 30 years.

After missing out on the title by a mere half-point in 2012, Sykes went on to fend off Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli to become the first British WSBK champion since James Toseland in 2013, as well as only the second rider to do so on Kawasaki machinery.

In recognition of this achievement, Sykes was duly put forward to receive the prominent RAC Torrens Trophy, which is awarded to an individual or organisation considered to have made an outstanding contribution to the cause of safe and skilful motor cycling in Britain

Fittingly, Sykes received the trophy during a ceremony at the Royal Automobile Clubhouse in Pall Mall, London from award incumbent Toseland, who has held the title since 2008 when he was recognised for his two World Superbike titles.

With the start of the 2014 World Superbike season less than a month away, Sykes – who confirmed to Crash.net he will indeed race with the No.1 plate this year – said it was an outstanding honour to be recognised in such revered company.

“I feel very privileged that the Royal Automobile Club considers me worthy of it,' said 28 year-old Tom. 'It's taken a long time, and a lot of hard work, and it's an honour to be recognised by such well respected industry figures. I am very proud.”

Initiated in 1978 and named after Arthur Bourne, a motorcycling journalist who wrote a column under the name of 'Torrens'.
