Alex Lowes: Suzuki is the best WSBK opportunity

Alex Lowes: I will be disappointed if I am not at the front battling with Eugene...
Alex Lowes says he is confident he can challenge multiple race winning team-mate Eugene Laverty in his first season of World Superbike Championship racing, adding that his decision to join Voltcom Crescent Suzuki over PBM in MotoGP was because it represented a 'better opportunity' for him.

The youngster joins the WSBK ranks after clinching the 2013 British Superbike Championship with Honda, Lowes becoming the first champion since Leon Camier – whom he replaces at Suzuki – to make the direct move to World Superbikes the following year.

Forming one half of an exciting all-new rider line-up for the Voltcom Crescent Racing team, Lowes joins 2013 runner-up Laverty and has immediately set his sights on proving competitive from the off following a rapid showing in testing.

“I will be disappointed if I am not at the front battling with Eugene,” Lowes said, speaking exclusively to Crash.net. “After testing that doesn't seem to be an unrealistic aim. It is down to me now. The bike and the team is great, so I need to keep my focus and we'll do well.”

Lowes's decision to join Suzuki comes after much speculation linking him with a move straight to MotoGP with Paul Bird Motorsport, whose rider Shane Byrne he beat to the BSB title.

However, while Lowes acknowledges that his – and twin brother Sam's - 'end goal' remains MotoGP, he felt Suzuki in World Superbikes represented a 'better opportunity' than competing with PBM in the 'Open' class of MotoGP.

“At the end of any year you speak with a lot of people to find the best opportunity for next year,” he continued. “I spoke with Paul Bird regarding MotoGP, but when the Suzuki opportunity came along I knew it was what I wanted to do, so I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The MotoGP thing was spoken about but when I was lucky enough to get the Suzuki call it was the best for me and I knew it was what I wanted to do.

“I want to be the best I can be and you dream about racing in MotoGP, but it's also about taking the right steps to get there. It's more about being on a competitive bike in whatever championship you're in.

“So my brother is in Moto2 and if he does really well and wins the championship in the next couple of years, it normally means he will get to progress to MotoGP and it's a similar situation for me. Our end goal is the same and while we may be in different places, we have a plan of what we want to do and we are going to work hard to achieve that.”

Jeez, people on here are always quick to bash Birdy. Anyone who invests the amount of money he has into motorsport and bike racing is good by me. Hasn't Birdy financially sponsored Scott Redding previously as well?

I think you underestimate Eugene greatly greavesit. He was brilliant in the last 5 races in 2013 and I think finally decided he wasn't going to be pushed around anymore by the likes of Melandri.which bodes well for this season. Alex is a huge talent and has shown pace in testing but keep in mind that Eugene was running development parts for most testing which robbed him of precious track time, while Alex was running a set up familiar to the team. I hope the bikes are competitive, their riders certainly are..
