Surgery for WSBK rider Sylvain Barrier

BMW Italia WSBK rider Sylvain Barrier will undergo surgery on his face following his road car accident in France.
World Superbike racer Sylvain Barrier is to undergo maxillofacial surgery in the wake of a road car accident to put him in a coma earlier this week.

The Frenchman, who was already recovering from a broken pelvis following a fall during testing at Phillip Island, suffered further injury when he was involved in an accident in his native France.

Though he was in a coma at one stage, Barrier is now out of it and is preparing for facial surgery, according to friend and mentor James Toseland.

Double FIM Superstock 1000 champion Barrier was due to embark on his first full season of WSBK racing in 2014 with BMW Italia, but it is unknown as to whether he will be back racing sooner or later.

Terrible accident for the budding WSBK star. You just never know what life has in store for you. Great to hear JT spoke with him. Let's hope Sylvain channels that championship winning pedigree of his to a quick recovery.
