Former World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss is to return to the track next month to ride Ducati's 1199 Panigale Superbike during a private test at Mugello, it has been confirmed.
The 2001, 2006 and 2008 world champion hung up his helmet after his final title-winning year, but has maintained a presence in the WSBK paddock since then and remains contracted with Ducati in an advisory capacity.
With Ducati's group test coinciding with his visit to Italy to head up his Troy Bayliss Academy, Bayliss has duly taken the opportunity to request an outing on the bike.
“He has to come to Mugello for his Academy doing the Ducati riding experience,” Ernesto Marinelli told Crash.net
. “We spoke in Australia he said he was getting a bit bored at home and he wanted to jump on a real bike again! So as we have the test in Mugello right before, he asked if he could do it and of course we said we would always have a bike for him whenever he likes.”
This won't be the first time Bayliss has sampled the full racing version of the Panigale having assisted with its development, though he hasn't participated in international competition since November 2008.
