WSBK Assen: Lowes ‘kick starts’ season with maiden podium

Alex Lowes can call himself a WSBK podium winner in only his third event as he turns in a confidence-boosting run to second at Assen.
Alex Lowes feels he is now able to kick-start his World Superbike Championship season after a confidence-boosting maiden podium finish in tricky weather conditions at Assen.

The Voltcom Crescent Suzuki rider has shown flashes of excellent speed on the GSX-R1000 since his switch to the international series, but his efforts have been tempered with various issues, including crashes, injuries and dry set-up woes.

However, with the wet conditions of race two at Assen levelling the playing field for the youngster, Lowes – who sealed his BSB title at Brands Hatch in similarly poor weather -, scythed his way up from ninth on the grid to finish in an impressive second position.

A timely maiden WSBK podium finish for a rider that had only a ninth place finish to show from the opening five races, though Lowes admits the wet weather played its part, he is confident he can achieve a similar feat in the dry.

“It's fantastic, it was a great race for me and it's really good for the team for me to finally get on the podium! It was a wet race, so it's never as nice as getting on the podium in the dry but I'm very happy and hopefully this can kick start our season after the injuries.

“It's been a really difficult start to the year for me, and now I've got some good points on the board and a podium, I'm looking forward to hopefully improving both myself and the bike, and seeing if we can be a bit closer to the front in the dry!”
