Guintoli ‘fully fit’, ready to ‘fight’
7 May 2014
Sylvain Guintoli says he is ready to 'fight' for victory in the fourth round of the 2014 World Superbike Championship at Imola after missing out on a double success in Assen.
The Frenchman notched up a second win of the season in the Netherlands with victory in race one, though his hopes of a double were scuppered when he crashed his Aprilia RSV4 in wet conditions whilst chasing down leader Jonathan Rea in race two.
Recovering to finish ninth regardless, the points earned for that fight back was enough to see him rise to second in the WSBK standings, just 12 points behind Tom Sykes.
With this in mind, Guintoli says he has recovered from the back pain he suffered in the accident and is ready to put pressure on the Kawasaki rider heading to his team's home event.
"In Assen we made big progress with the RSV4 and we showed our fighting spirit, it paid off with the win in race one. I want to continue in this way in Imola. Although my back was really painful after the crash in race two, I am now back to full fitness and ready to fight for the win.”
Also a home round for Marco Melandri, the Italian doesn't have a glittering record around the Imola circuit having never stepped on the podium in six races there. Despite this, he is determined to put on a good show for the Italian fans as he looks to close the 39 point gap to the top.
"Imola is my true home round and I really want to do well, so I'll take to the track with a huge desire to battle and to do well. I certainly don't expect things to be easy. There will be a lot of fast riders here, but with the entire team we have put in a lot of hard work and the time is coming to reap the benefits of what we have done so far to improve."
