Davide Giugliano and Ducati led opening practice for their home World Superbike event at Imola on Friday morning.
Giugliano, currently sixth in the standings with one podium, burst clear of Aprilia's long-time session leader Sylvain Guintoli in the very last minute.
Jonathan Rea slotted into an even later second place (+0.251s) for Pata Honda, demoting Guintoli to third (+0.310s).
Giugliano's team-mate Chaz Davies made it two Panigales in the top four, with home star Marco Melandri a fraction slower than Davies for fifth (+0.568s). Kawasaki's reigning champion and 2014 title leader Tom Sykes began the weekend in sixth (+0.760s).
Rea's team-mate Leon Haslam (+0.866s), Sykes' team-mate Loris Baz (+1.556s), leading Evo rider David Salom (+1.774s) and Crescent Suzuki's Alex Lowes (+2.038s) completed the top ten.
Toni Elias (Aprilia), Ivan Goi (Ducati) and Leon Camier (BMW) were within one tenth of Lowes, whose race winning team-mate Eugene Laverty was only 17th (+3.212s) this morning.
