Quickest on Friday morning, Davide Giugliano and Ducati moved back to the head of the timesheets during Saturday morning's third free practice for their home Imola WSBK round.
Giugliano had slipped to fifth after failing to improve in Friday afternoon's disrupted session, but was soon on the move in FP3.
The Italian began the closing stages behind Kawasaki's world champion Tom Sykes and Friday pace setter Jonathan Rea, then edged Sykes out of the top spot by just 0.071s with a 1m 47.511s on his final flying lap.
Pata Honda's Rea lowered his Friday time by half-a-second to complete a close top three covered by 0.154s.
Home star Marco Melandri was the top Aprilia rider in fourth (+0.433s), while Eugene Laverty delivered the form he insisted was possible after technical problems on Friday by claiming fifth place (+0.520s) for Voltcom Crescent Suzuki.
Giugliano's team-mate Chaz Davies also led the session but had dropped back to sixth (+0.625s) by the chequered flag. Crescent rookie Alex Lowes began his second day at the circuit with a solid seventh (+0.685s), while Rea's team-mate Leon Haslam (+0.739s) made it three Brits in a row.
Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) and Loris Baz (Kawasaki) completed the top ten, all of whom will now gain direct access to this afternoon's Superpole 2 session.
Top Evo rider Leon Camier (BMW) leads the list of those heading to Superpole 1 and was the final rider within one-second of Giugliano.
