WSBK Donington: Davies enjoying ‘big lift’ ahead of home round

Chaz Davies says his double podium finish last time out at Imola has given himself and Ducati a 'big lift' ahead of his home Donington round.
Chaz Davies says his double podium finish last time out at Imola has given him a 'big lift' ahead of his home Donington Park round following a modest start to his 2014 World Superbike Championship season with Ducati.

Joining Davide Giugliano in joining the factory Ducati team over the winter, Davies and his team-mate have spearheaded development on the 1199 Panigale, a machine that achieved just a single podium finish in the wet during its maiden WSBK season in 2013.

With Giugliano adding to its wet weather tally by finishing third at Assen, Davies finally achieved the twin-cylinder machine's first dry podium at Imola with a run to second position, a feat he managed twice on race day.

A boost for the Welshman after an indifferent start to his season with the manufacturer, Davies is hopeful the results will mark something of a turnaround for him.

“It's a big lift coming off the back of a couple of difficult races,” he told “Phillip Island was OK, but it was strange race day with tyre issues, but we also had strange weekends in Aragon and definitely struggled at Assen. So to turn it around at Imola with two podiums, was what we needed.

“We took the bike in a different direction to help it do what I wanted it to do, so I could ride hard from lap one to lap twenty.”

Asked whether he thought the unique characteristics of Imola make it difficult to predict whether he can replicate that form elsewhere, Davies says at worst the team learned a lot from the event.

“It is hard to say,” he added. “You get to a different track and a different character, but I am hoping that we know this is a good direction, so it's a good base to start from. There will be tracks that will play to the Ducati and others that we will suffer at, but we learned a lot at Imola so we should be able to take that to the next races."
