Aprilia has dominated the opening day of free practice for the World Superbike Championship's maiden foray to Sepang with Sylvain Guintoli leading another 1-2-3 for the manufacturer.
Circulating the undulating Malaysian circuit in 2mins 05.096secs towards the end of the FP2 session, Guintoli would leapfrog to the head of the timesheets ahead of Marco Melandri and Toni Elias, the RSV4 duo not improving their times but doing enough to ensure an Aprilia top three lock-out.
Even so, things remain tight at the front with just four tenths covering the first seven riders, with Davide Giugliano leading the best of the rest in fourth, from WSBK championship leader Tom Sykes, Eugene Laverty- who made big gains in the closing minutes - and Chaz Davies.
Completing the top ten, Jonathan Rea, Loris Baz and Alex Lowes are currently safe to proceed to SP2 provisionally with just FP3 remaining, with 11th place Leon Haslam left out of contention for the time being.
Behind him, a shuffle of positions in the EVO class would see Leon Camier lead the way in 12th overall on the BMW Italia, ahead of David Salom, Christian Iddon and Niccolo Canepa.
