Davide Giugliano has ended the first day of World Superbike Championship action at Misano with the fastest time after prevailing in a twice-interrupted FP2 session.

Setting himself up for a direct passage into Superpole tomorrow, Giugliano moved to the top in the final ten minutes after a lengthy stoppage to clear the remnants of Aaron Yates' expired EBR.

Prior to that red flag period it seemed Marco Melandri was destined to top the timesheets once again having already set the pace in FP1, but the Italian would be overhauled first by Tom Sykes in the closing minutes before Giugliano went quickest of all to keep the Italian flag flying on home soil.

A close session for the leading contenders, the top 11 would be covered by just a second, with Sykes and Melandri leading Giugliano's chasing pack in second and third, while Chaz Davies ensured a strong start for Ducati in fourth.

Loris Baz completed the top five, ahead of Alex Lowes on the best of the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki machines, while Sylvain Guintoli couldn't make gains in the closing stages having been fastest of all in the opening minutes.

Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty assured themselves of a top ten finish to the day in eighth and ninth, while Toni Elias squeezed out Leon Haslam in the fight for tenth and a provisional spot in Superpole 2.

In the EVO category, Niccolo Canepa was fastest again in 12th overall, this time with close competition from Ayrton Badovini just three tenths behind, while class leader David Salom was 15th best and third in class.

Ahead of FP3 tomorrow morning - which will determine who will progress to Superpole 1 and Superpole 2 - Fabien Foret, Sheridan Morais, Matteo Baiocco, Ivan Goi and Sylvain Barrier command provisional top twenty positions, but with ten other riders capable of unseating them it is likely to be a competitive session for those available spots.
