Sylvain Guintoli says he wishes he had a third World Superbike Championship race at Misano to put his improvements on the Aprilia to work as he failed to land a podium in Italy.

One of the pace setters during free practice, Guintoli was a strong tip for the win aboard the Aprilia but couldn't get on terms with dominant winner Tom Sykes as he laboured to fifth place in race one and fourth in race two.

Struggling with a bad tyre during the first outing, before an error cost him a shot at the rostrum battle with Loris Baz and Marco Melandri in the second, though Guintoli is satisfied to still be second in the overall WSBK standings, he admits he had 'expected more' from race day.

"In terms of the championship at least I am holding onto second place in the standings. But I definitely was expecting more. We are not missing any pure speed, but we need to work on consistent performance as far as race pace goes.

"In race one we made the wrong tyre choice, whereas in race two with the right options and a few changes to the bike geometry we were able to significantly reduce the gap behind the leaders.

"While I was with Marco and Baz I made a few mistakes too many which kept me from battling for the podium in the end. It's a shame there is no race three... All joking aside, we need to keep working to be more consistent in the race."

Guintoli is 39 points behind Sykes in the standings and two points ahead of third place Baz.
