Marco Melandri has maintained his place at the top of the World Superbike Championship timesheets following the first day of action at Portimao, despite the competition closing in on him in FP2.

The Italian held a four tenth advantage over closest rival Sylvain Guintoli after FP1, his lap of 1min 43.880secs staying firm at the top of the timesheets after FP2 to leave him quickest of all on the Friday as high temperatures nixed the usual gains made between the morning and the afternoon.
