WSBK Portimao: Rea: Prospect of wet race made me giddy!

Jonathan Rea: When I heard the rain on my motorhome as I watched the Tour de France, I started getting giddy and singing as I was getting changed!
Jonathan Rea says he knew a wet second race at Portimao was his 'chance' to claw back ground in the World Superbike Championship standings having struggled to match his rivals in the dry.

Winner of the only other wet weather race to take place in 2014 at Assen, Rea duly lived up to his reputation as something of a 'rain master' as he swept into an early lead from the front row in the sodden conditions of the second race.

Leading by more than four seconds at one stage, though Rea would be reeled in by the charging Aprilias of Sylvain Guintoli and Marco Melandri at the half-way stage, their subsequent collision would clear the way for him to complete a much coveted fourth WSBK win of the season.

Coming after he finished a disappointing fifth in the dry first race having led initially, Rea admits he 'became giddy and started singing' when the rain began to fall ahead of race two.

“I was really disappointed after race one because we had good pace in warm-up this morning; but I'm not sure if it was the tyre or not because we had changed nothing on the bike. When I heard the rain coming on my motorhome roof as I watched a bit of the Tour de France ahead of race two, I started getting a little bit giddy and singing as I was getting changed! I knew that it was a chance for me.

“I tried to do my own race from the front but I saw from my lap board that the Aprilias had better pace at the middle point of the race. The track had started to dry out a bit and we were really suffering with corner exit but, although the conditions were a great leveller for all riders, it's nice to take a win.”

One of only two riders to have scored in every WSBK race this season, though Rea remains somewhat frustrated that his dry weather pace isn't quite on a par with his rivals, he is delighted to be well in the hunt after eight rounds.

“I'd prefer to take it in the dry and we can't get too excited because it's a wet win; but we'll take them any way we can and it's 25 points not just for me but for the whole team. They're consistently working so, so hard to bring the package to the front, and they gave me a really great, user-friendly CBR to ride today, so I'm really happy for them.”

The highest-scorer of the day, Rea's win sees him consolidate fourth in the WSBK standings, 49 points off the overall lead but only six points behind Guintoli in
