Series leader Tom Sykes has moved to the top of the timesheets following second free practice for the 2014 World Superbike Championship at Laguna Seca.
The Kawasaki rider – a race winner in the United States last season – took charge after just 15mins of the session, his lap time of 1min 23.462secs proving more than good enough to keep his rivals at a comfortable length behind him.
Chaz Davies made it a British 1-2 on his Ducati in second position, ahead of Aprilia Racing duo Marco Melandri and Sylvain Guintoli, the FP1 pace setter failing to improve on his time between sessions to slip back to fourth on the timesheets.
Eugene Laverty and Davide Giugliano were amongst those to make gains in the session, rising to fifth and sixth respectively, ahead of Jonathan Rea, Toni Elias, Leon Haslam and Loris Baz.
With FP3 taking place later today, the fight to reach SP2 automatically currently sees Alex Lowes and leading EVO rider Niccolo Canepa occupy the two remaining top twelve spots, though the latter commands a mere two tenths advantage over David Salom and Sylvain Barrier.
Elsewhere, Team Hero EBR retain a provisional spot for Superpole tomorrow courtesy of Geoff May in 19th place, while Leon Camier was the biggest improver between sessions as he took 2.5secs off his time to leap up to 20th on the MV Agusta.
