Baz perplexed by uncompetitive weekend

15 July 2014

Loris Baz says he isn't certain as to why he endured an anonymous weekend at Laguna Seca, the Frenchman struggling for pace throughout his first visit to the Californian circuit.

Coming into the event third in the standings and poised behind Sylvain Guintoli, Baz never strayed higher than eighth in the free practice sessions and was forced to qualify for SP2 via SP1 for the first time this season after ending FP3 outside the top ten.

Going on to qualify in eighth place, Baz struggled thereafter for feeling on the Kawasaki Racing ZX-10R, complaining of difficulties 'turning in' in race one as he laboured to ninth place, just a few lengths ahead of EVO team-mate David Salom. Suffering similar issues in race two, Baz at least had a relatively high attrition rate to thank for getting as high as sixth.

Indeed, the Frenchman – who has stood on the podium eight times in 2014 – was mystified at his lack of pace, labelling it as a 'strange' weekend.

“We have been strong in all rounds this season but this one was not the same. We saved some points and we are still not so far from the riders immediately in front of us in the championship. I am not sure what was wrong in race one but from lap two until the end I could not enter the turns, could not exit the corners the way I wanted. I cannot understand why because we have changed the bike settings a lot.

“I have tried to change my style but our result is very similar and it is very strange. In race two we found some things that worked better for us but not quite enough. It was a strange weekend but we made a recovery in race two and for sure it was better than race one.”

Baz's results see him slip to fourth place in the WSBK standings behind Jonathan Rea.
