WSBK: No South Africa replacement, three rounds remain

The cancelled South Africa WSBK event will not be replaced, meaning just three rounds of the 2014 season remain.
Just three rounds of the 2014 World Superbike Championship remain after it was confirmed there will be no replacement for the cancelled South African event.

Last month the FIM and Dorna WSBK Organization announced the proposed round at Phakisa Freeway in South Africa, which was due to be held on October 19th, had been cancelled after it failed to meet the necessary requirements to host the event.

At the time it was hinted that a replacement event would be sourced, with Brno initially rumoured to be in the running, but the late announcement and the concern over holding an October round in a cool European country has seen that plan scrapped.

It means just three events remain at Jerez, Magny-Cours and Doha for the WSBK and WSS classes, with a month's gap between the final two rounds.

Interestingly, the SBK Commission will look into the possibility of compensating for the available points that will be missed as a result of the cancelled event.

“A discussion within the SBK Commission will define any possible options to compensate for the available amount of points that will be missed through the cancellation of the South African event in both in the WSBK and WSS standings and further information will follow in due course.”

The SSTK 1000, SSTK 600 and the European Junior Cup will conclude in France in October, with the prize-giving ceremony taking place on the evening of 5th October. The WSBK and WSS prize giving will take place in Doha.

Tom Sykes currently leads the WSBK standings over Sylvain Guintoli by 44 points with just six races remaining, while Michael van der Mark is on the cusp of the WSS title courtesy of a 53 point lead with just three races and 75 points available.

Remember the good ol' days of WSB, when it was owned by Infront? It was only a few years ago. Good organisation. Packed grids. Numerous full works teams. Genuine stars and strength in depth. Big crowds. Enthusiastic circuit owners. Brands Hatch. Growing series. Then suddenly it all seemed to go wrong. Why on earth was that? Oh yes, Dorna. Nuff said.
