WSBK Jerez: WSBK to resume with 24 entries

After a lengthy eight-week break between races, the World Superbike Championship resumes in Spain... albeit minus two teams.
The 2014 World Superbike Championship will resume at Jerez after a lengthy eight-week break with a reduced grid of 24 bikes following the exit of MAHI Kawasaki and Alstare Bimota.

Wild-card entries notwithstanding, WSBK 2014 has featured around 27 bikes per event this season, but the decision by the SBK Commission to suspend Bimota from competition having failed to reached its production quota for homologation has eliminated two competitive entries from the running.

With the Italian manufacturer, which has proven a multiple class winner in the EVO category in 2014 even if it was ineligible to score points, out of contention, the EVO class has also lost a third entry in MAHI Kawasaki, with Fabien Foret omitted from the Jerez entry list in line with the team's already-confirmed exit from the Supersport class.

Meanwhile, with the prolonged summer break allowing for ample recuperation time for some of the more injured riders on the grid, Sylvain Barrier, Alex Lowes, Claudio Corti, Luca Scassa and Imre Toth are all listed to compete having been suffering following the previous round at Laguna Seca.

8 weeks break is too much IMHO. I can understand 3 weeks for a half way point, but 8 weeks toward the end? Still, I'd rather watch WSBK than MotoGP. Agreed with Martin's comments above, even out the field a little more and don't blame the series for a manufacturer's lack of production. I was happy they were there, and I'd bet they were too. Now they can go back and work on next year's bike and start that production! Hoping this series gets a few pissed off MotoGP pilots that will never get that factory/competitive bike in GP to defect. List of names might include: Hayden Bradl Smith just for starters.

24 bikes is plenty, but hopefully they will go fully EVO in future. The article shouldn't try to blame the championship for Bimota's failure to keep their promises to produce a legal bike though.
