Marco Melandri has opened up the tenth round of the 2014 World Superbike Championship on top as the series sparked back into action in Jerez following a prolonged summer break.
With his title hopes fading further during the hiatus following the decision to cancel the South African round, Melandri suggested he will continue pushing as he emerged a tenth up on Kawasaki rider and WSBK championship leader Tom Sykes.
With three different manufacturers inside the top three, Chaz Davies began his weekend in positive style in third position aboard the Ducati, while local favourite Toni Elias was fourth best on the privateer Red Devils Roma Aprilia.
Loris Baz completed the top five, ahead of Sykes' closest WSBK rival Sylvain Guintoli, while Davide Giugliano, Eugene Laverty, Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes completed the top ten.
In the EVO class, Sylvain Barrier was quickest of all in 12th position overall, ahead of champion elect David Salom, Niccolo Canepa and Alessandro Andreozzi.
