WSBK Jerez: Davies ends 15-year Jerez podium jinx

Chaz Davies finally gets the chance to stand on the podium in Jerez after a strong pair of race finishes for Ducati WSBK
It may have taken thirteen years but Chaz Davies finally stood on the podium at Jerez in a world championship event after a battling performance in the first World Superbike race.

Having struggled in qualifying, Davies started from seventh place and the third row but a fine getaway in race one put him in touch with the leaders on the opening lap.

By lap four he had climbed to third place and continued to swap places with Davide Giugliano and Marco Melandri until half race distance. It was then that the 27-year old encountered familiar problems with the rear tyre, which blunted his pace and allowed the Aprilias to build a substantial margin.

Despite this, Davies made the most of exits ahead for Loris Baz and Giugliano to lift him to third place by the chequered flag.

“To be honest I'm really happy with the first eight laps of the race,” he told “I was confident I was looking after the tyre, I was picking it up well and things were working well. After about eight laps I started getting that vague feeling we've been having once the tyre drops on the rear. It gives way then the bike stops turning. It just starts getting sketchy.

“It's a lot more sensitive then and it's easy to fold the front. You can do what we did in the first eight laps and then we'd be in a position to challenge for the win but unfortunately we're not quite there yet. But even so, to be on the podium is good. The boys have done a fantastic job in the last few races, we're on it and we're very, very close.”

Going on to finish fourth in race two, though Davies was pleased with his haul of points, he admits it doesn't quite make up for a disastrous Laguna Seca round

“It doesn't quite make up for that [Laguna Seca]. But to be on the podium at Jerez is great. I've been racing here for such a long time and I think it's the first time in fifteen years that I've been on the podium. I consider it one of my weakest tracks so a podium is a real bonus.”

While he was embroiled with his team-mate and Melandri in race one Davies revealed he hoped to get a tow from the Aprilia man in the second half of the race.

“The bike was feeling good then. It was just a case of consolidating position. I knew Marco was fast. To be honest I wasn't that happy to pass him but he wasn't so strong and I didn't want the other guys going away in the early laps. But I knew Marco was strong in the last ten so I tried to get myself on the back of the group in front.”

Davies two results consolidate his sixth place in the world championship. He now sits 74 points behind Baz in
