Davide Giugliano has ended the first day of World Superbike Championship action with the fastest time by a comfortable margin at Magny-Cours, ahead of Eugene Laverty.
The Italian, who is still seeking his first WSBK win on the Ducati 1199 Panigale, struck to the front of the field with 20mins of the session remaining, his 1min 37.886secs benchmark proving too strong for any other rider to come close to.
Having been top five in FP1, MotoGP-bound Eugene Laverty completed an encouraging day in second position on the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki, heading up the closely matched Sylvain Guintoli and Jonathan Rea, the trio split by just two hundredths of a second.
Marco Melandri completed the top five on the second of the Aprilias, with WSBK leader Tom Sykes slipping down to sixth position after only making a marginal improvement on his fastest lap from FP1, ahead of Loris Baz, Chaz Davies, Alex Lowes and Leon Haslam.
Behind them, Xavi Fores rose to become the fastest of the 3C Ducati wild-cards in 11th place, with Niccolo Canepa assuming the EVO initiative in 14th, ahead of David Salom and Sylvain Barrier.
