A last gasp effort from Eugene Laverty would see him spring to the top of the timesheets in second free practice for the final World Superbike Championship round in Qatar.
His final WSBK event before he heads to MotoGP in 2015, Laverty's late effort of 1min 58.449secs was enough to put him a tenth clear of the competition on the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki.
His performance would deny a surprise a surprise top spot for Chaz Davies who, having spent much of his day outside the top ten, surged to the head of the timesheets in the final minute on the Ducati with a time some 2.5secs quicker than he managed in FP1.
Several riders would take turns out front as times continued to come down under the floodlights, including Sylvain Guintoli and Jonathan Rea, before they were bumped down to third and fourth, with Leon Haslam completing the top five.
Loris Baz led the Kawasaki challenge in sixth place, with title contending team-mate Tom Sykes once again down in ninth having failed to improve on his best time as others around him advanced. The championship leader ended the session behind Alex Lowes and leading EVO rider Niccolo Canepa.
Elsewhere, Davide Giugliano's session was ended early by a technical problems on the Ducati that leave him 16th on the timesheets, while Alex Cudlin – racing this weekend for Pedercini Kawasaki – suffered a crash.
In a slight change to usual proceedings, the third free practice session – which determined who progresses to Superpole – will take place today.
