Jonathan Rea has declared himself a fan of racing under floodlights after a competitive first day of World Superbike Championship action at Losail, Qatar.

The PATA Honda rider didn't stray outside the top four in any of the day's three practice sessions, the Ulsterman completing 52 laps to end up second quickest behind Davide Giugliano.

Indeed, ahead of the first WSBK races to be held at night, Rea was impressed with the spectacle of riding under floodlights.

"The overall the package seems really good here and I'm really enjoying riding," he said. "Hence the reason I put so many laps in! I'm learning every time I go out because it's quite a different experience riding under the lights. But I'm just so happy to be out there because I feel like a Supercross rider! I wish I could ride under lights every race!

Looking to the remainder of the weekend, though Rea says there are still improvements to be made on the CBR1000RR, he is pleased with the positive start to the event.

"We've worked really well. Before coming here, I haven't been a fan of three sessions in one day and it's been a tough day. To have three sessions and finish this late at night is quite difficult but we've worked really hard on weight distribution and spring balance. We're still trying to find the optimum session because I'm still struggling to finish off the corner in some areas."
