Carl Fogarty wins ‘I’m A Celebrity…’

World Superbike legend Carl Fogarty on the top step of a very different podium!
Four time World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty has been crowned King of the Jungle after winning the 2014 edition of 'I'm a Celebrity, Get me Out of here!'

The popular reality TV show sees celebrities face numerous challenges - including the infamous 'Bushtucker Trials' - while camped together in the Australian bush.

Frequent elimination votes by the viewing public decide which celebrities stay in the competition.

Actor Craig Charles, broadcaster Michael Buerk, rapper Tinchy Stryder, actress Gemma Collins, presenter Melanie Sykes, model Nadia Forde, actress Vicki Michelle, model Kendra Wilkinson, X Factor's Jake Quickenden, former MP Edwina Currie and footballer Jimmy Bullard all began the show alongside Foggy.

But it was the motorcycle racer who won over the hearts of the nation to be voted as winner, after going up against Quickenden in the final.

A clearly emotional Foggy fell to his knees as he was announced as the show's champion, saying: “It's unbelievable. It's like this is all a dream and someone is playing a joke on me. Thanks everyone for voting.”

Speaking just before the final vote, the 49-year-old said: “When I used to race I felt a big responsibility to win for the public. And for the public to put me in this positing now. I can't put it into words. To get back onto the podium one more time after 15 years would just be the biggest thing ever at this stage in my life.

“I've got some great memories and fun times. A roller-coaster ride,” he added. “It was a little tougher than I expected to be honest. Boiling our own water, keeping the fire going all the time, emptying the dunny!

“The food I coped with pretty well, but I had to keep myself busy during the long periods of boredom… Nobody thought they were up themselves and everybody in there was lovely. They were 10 really nice people - and I'm not really a people person.

“I couldn't have lost to a better man,” fellow finalist Quickenden said of Fogarty. “Honestly, he's been an absolute Crocodile Dundee. He deserves it. He's a legend.”

Foggy had soon struck up a friendship with Jimmy Bullard, resulting in the pair being given the 'Joggy' nickname. “He was my best mate in there,” said Foggy. “When he left I fell apart like a cheap watch!”

Fogarty, forced to retire from racing due to serious injuries in 2000, holds the all-time records for both WSBK titles and race wins (60). Foggy also ran his own WSBK team in partnership with Petronas from 2003-2006, using the three-cylinder FP1 machine.

Like the reality TV show, Foggy's career-ending accident took place in Australia.

Nice one, Foggy. Very well deserved in my opinion - he took everything they threw at him with great humour and won over the general public. He seems a much mellower person in retirement. Good for him & good for bike racing too.
