8th – Leon Camier
Average poll score out of ten: 6.0
BMW Motorrad Italia / MV Agusta RC
BMW S1000RR (EVO) / MV Agusta F4
The reluctant 'Superbike Super-sub' of 2014, Leon Camier at least made the most of his dwindled opportunities when they presented themselves, making his presence felt during a brief stint on an EVO-specification BMW and the MV Agusta F4.
Left on the sidelines after Crescent Suzuki moved to capture the signature of the unexpectedly-available Eugene Laverty, the 2014 WSBK season began without Camier on the grid for the first time since his full debut in 2010.
Fortunately for him - albeit most unfortunate for Sylvain Barrier -, a renewed chance came about by replacing the injured Frenchman on the EVO specification BMW Italia S1000RR, a one-off deal that swelled to five rounds until the bike went back to its rightful owner.
Taking to the new machine with aplomb, Camier notched up a class pole and win on his first outing and thereafter proved more than a match for the likes of David Salom, Niccolo Canepa and Ayrton Badovini. With this in mind, there is little doubt that, had Camier stayed on the bike, a title challenge was certainly in the offing.
Camier returned at Laguna Seca with a last minute call up to ride the factory MV Agusta F4, a bike that by all accounts hadn't exactly taken the series by storm since its arrival. With little testing, Camier rode the bike into the top ten during an admittedly high attrition second race, which at the time was the bike's best finish in 2014.
It is that performance – along with a number of noteworthy efforts on the Aspar Honda in MotoGP – that has rightly earned Camier a route back to World Superbikes in 2015, once again with MV Agusta.
Whether he is the man to direct MV Agusta to greater things remains to be seen – particularly if he has to do so as the manufacturer's sole entrant -, but Camier at least proved in flashes why he deserves nothing less than a competitive WSBK ride.
