David Giugliano upped the pace on the second day of World Superbike Championship testing in Jerez as he lowered his best lap time to a remarkable 1min 39.332secs.

Lapping a full two seconds quicker than Jonathan Rea's best lap from day one, Giugliano's performance on the Ducati 1199 R saw him turn in a time almost a second quicker than Loris Baz's pole position winning effort during the WSBK round in October, despite a fall and technical issues.

Indeed, on a quick day for those WSBK riders participating, the top six all dipped below Baz's formerly successful effort with Kawasaki pairing Tom Sykes and Jonathan Ra following three and four tenths adrift, while Chaz Davies confirmed Ducati's threatening upturn in pace with fourth best.

As a reference point, Marc Marquez's MotoGP pole position in Jerez last season was a 1min 38.120s.

Having completed only six laps on day one, Leon Haslam bounced back to fifth on the Red Devils Roma Aprilia, ahead of Suzuki's Alex Lowes as five British riders filled the top six.

With Sylvain Guintoli ruled out through injury, Michael van der Mark assumed PATA Honda's workload with the seventh fastest time and top rookie, ahead of fellow series newcomers Nico Terol and Randy de Puniet. The experienced Matteo Baiocco rounded out the top ten.

Further back, Erik Buell Racing continues to make progress in the hands of Niccolo Canepa. Though the Italian was only 15th fastest, his time was just four tenths shy of his best lap on a Ducati last year and three seconds better than his predecessors on the bike.

Giugliano has always shown he is very fast, we've seen many many riders who are fast but crash a lot and it takes them longer to learn how to stay on and then become champions. Lorenzo, Stoner crashed a lot in his first year, Alex Lowes in BSB from 2011-2013, Marquez crashed a lot in the first half of 2013. If Giugliano can find a bit more consistency he's got a good chance of being in the title fight. I have a feeling it will be between Sykes and Rea but Giugliano and Haslam are my dark horses this year. (Oh and all Simoncelli ever did was fall off the bike and he is undeservedly considered a legend. Talk about double standards)
