De Puniet's confidence dented after high-side

New Crescent Suzuki rider Randy de Puniet says his confidence was knocked slightly following a high-side on the final day of the Jerez test in Spain
World Superbike rookie Randy de Puniet escaped unhurt after a high-side on day two of the Jerez test as the Crescent Suzuki recruit admitted he 'lost a bit of confidence' after the incident.

De Puniet is continuing to adapt his style to the GSX-R1000 after missing out on crucial track time in the previous test at Portimao in Portugal due to cold and damp weather conditions.

Conditions were perfect in Spain for the final two-day test prior to the official shakedown at Phillip Island in Australia on Monday, February 16 ahead of the opening race, but de Puniet said he had a 'strange feeling' in the rear tyre moments before his tumble on the exit of turn one, where world champion PATA Honda's Sylvain Guintoli also came off on the opening day of the test, hurting his neck and ankle.

“Portugal was not so good due to the weather conditions and I only managed 35 dry laps on the last day, it was enough to learn the track but not to be fast, but I think for the race it will be ok - it's a nice track but not easy,” he said.

“Jerez was much better with two good days, until this afternoon. I had a high-side at turn one, with a strange feeling in the rear tyre after leaving the pits, so we lost time and a little confidence so we just tried to continue to work on the bike to regain the feeling.

“Overall the test was quite good, I just need to continue to work to adapt my riding style to the GSX-R but I think we have a good pace and with a little more improvement in Australia we will be ready to fight for a good position,” added de Puniet, who also had a minor front-end spill at the hairpin.

De Puniet completed 140 laps, setting a best time on the unofficial charts to end the test in ninth place with a 1m 40.977s lap.

The Crescent Suzuki team will return to the UK to make final preparations ahead of the season opener in Australia, although Alex Lowes' Crew Chief Pete Jennings and Technical Co-Ordinator Dale Meech are travelling to Japan for a week of engine-assembly with partners Yoshimura, before joining the rest of the team at Phillip Island for the official test.

if a little crash dented his confidence just wait till everyone leaves him for dead at the start of the race as they did every race last year when this team could not sort out a simple launch problem.
