for full official testing results from Phillip Island [Monday]
Alex Lowes led a quartet of British riders at the end of the first day of official World Superbike pre-season testing in Australia, the Suzuki rider nosing ahead of Jonathan Rea shortly before the chequered flag.
The Englishman bounced to the top of the timesheets with two minutes of the day's activity remaining, unseating Jonathan Rea by a full three tenths, denying the Ulsterman the chance to mark his debut outing at Phillip Island as a Kawasaki rider with the fastest time.
A strong start to the week for the new look Red Devils Roma Aprilia team – which will become the de facto factory representative for Aprilia in 2015 -, Leon Haslam was third quickest, with rookie team-mate Jordi Torres an impressive fifth place on his first outing aboard the RSV4 at Phillip ISland. Former champion Tom Sykes split the pair in fourth, completing the most laps at 72.
Elsewhere, Davide Giugliano was sixth fastest despite a heavy tumble at turn 11 a short time into the afternoon session, the Italian suffering a similar fate to Randy de Puniet. The former MotoGP rider was an early front runner before falling on only his 27th lap and though he was still a notable eight best it would rule him out for the remainder of the day.
Chaz Davies followed his Ducati team-mate in seventh on the Aruba.it Ducatis, with PATA Honda rookie Michael van der Mark ninth and former Moto2 rider Nico Terol rounding out the top ten.
Still suffering with back pain from his crash at Jerez, Sylvain Guintoli kept it easy for 13th fastest on the second of the PATA Hondas, just ahead of Niccolo Canepa, who got the Team Hero EBR into a noteworthy 14th best, in front of Matteo Baiocco, Sylvain Barrier and Tati Mercado.
