Davide Giugliano will miss the season opener of the new World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island after crashing during testing, his Aruba.it Ducati team has confirmed via Twitter.

The Italian, who had been a strong pace setter on the Panigale R during the final test before this weekend's first race of the season in Australia, suffered a hard fall at turn 11 and was taken to hospital for checks.

A CAT scan revealed fractures to the L1 and L2 vertebrae in the lumbar region of his back. Although the injury isn't consider too serious the team and Giugliano have come to the decision he will not be fit enough to race.

"I'm very upset about the crash because things had been going very well," Giugliano said. "I had good feeling with the bike by the end of session one and I was able to lap with consistently fast times.

The team is yet to confirm whether they will run a replacement rider for Giugliano, but at such short notice it seems unlikely.
