WSBK Phillip Island: Bayliss back in the groove despite limited laps

Troy Bayliss admits he is 'lacking confidence' but otherwise has a good feeling on the Ducati as he prepares for his shock WSBK comeback.
Troy Bayliss has made his much anticipated first appearance on the Ducati Panigale during free practice for the 2015 World Superbike Championship opener at Phillip Island as he prepares for his sensational comeback

Bayliss caused a shock this week by revealing he will come out of retirement for his home round this weekend to replace the injured Davide Giugliano, the three-time world champion set for his first WSBK races since 2008.

Getting his first competitive laps on the Ducati 1199 Panigale R during the two free practice sessions, technical issues consigned him to the pit-lane in the morning, but he would manage 19 laps in the afternoon to come away a creditable 17th best from 25 riders.

Despite his time off the bike in a competitive capacity and the time-sapping problems, Bayliss feels he is beginning to get acquainted with the Ducati again, even if he is understandably lacking confidence.

“I think I've only done about 19 laps all up. We lost almost the whole session this morning due to a technical issue which was a pity, but then this afternoon we were able to make some progress and I really started to feel good on the bike.

“I'm not feeling very confident with the back of the bike right now, in maximum lean, as there's some sliding there, but I'm sure we'll be able to sort that out tomorrow. I can say that we're definitely making progress.

“There's a lot we still need to do tomorrow of course, but we're taking baby steps and we're getting there. The important thing is that I'm really enjoying riding the bike and overall I'm very happy for the 'short' Friday I've had.”
