Tom Sykes got into the groove ahead of the opening World Superbike race at Phillip Island as the Kawasaki rider came out on top during morning warm-up.

Sykes, who will start the two 22-lap races from the third row after missing the chance of setting a fast lap when Superpole 2 was red-flagged on Saturday following a crash involving David Salom, topped the times in 1m 32.276s, with Voltcom Crescent Suzuki's Randy de Puniet second quickest, 0.218s behind.

The impressive Nico Terol was next on the Althea Ducati with a lap in 1m 31.505s, leaving him 0.229s behind Yorkshireman Sykes, whose team-mate and pole-sitter Jonathan Rea was fourth fastest in 1m 31.516s.

Aprilia rookie Jordi Torres and Ducati's Chaz Davies, who earned a front row start with the second fastest time in Superpole, were fifth and sixth respectively.

Leon Haslam - who starts from third place on the front row - was seventh on the Red Devils Aprilia RSV4, lapping in 1m 31.881s, followed by Pata Honda riders Michael van der Mark and world champion Sylvain Guintoli as one second covered the top nine.

Aussie great Troy Bayliss was tenth quickest in warm-up on the Ducati, with his time of 1m 32.634s leaving him 1.358s behind Sykes.

Niccolo Canepa on the Team Hero EBR was 11th followed by British pair Leon Camier (MV Agusta) and Voltcom Crescent Suzuki's Alex Lowes, who was 2.067s off the pace set by Sykes.
