Troy Bayliss will progress straight through to Superpole 2 for the second round of the World Superbike Championship in Thailand as wet conditions prevented any rider from improving in third free practice.
Sitting pretty in seventh place after FP2, returning three-time champion Bayliss needed to retain a spot inside the top ten by the end of FP3 in order to guarantee himself automatic entry in the pole position-defining SP2 session, but inclement weather ultimately decided it in his favour.
His second event back in World Superbikes after making a sensational comeback in Australia after seven years out of action, Bayliss will be joined in the definitive qualifying session by Alex Lowes, Jonathan Rea, Chaz Davies, Leon Haslam and Tom Sykes, as well as Sylvain Guintoli, Matteo Baiocco, Jordi Torres and David Salom.
In the meantime, SP1 will be contested by a handful of high profile riders as they tussle for two available spots that will take them into SP2, including Michael van der Mark (12th), Randy de Puniet (13th) and Leon Camier (16th).
They will battle it out with Leandro Mercado, Sylvain Barrier, Nico Terol, Roman Ramos, Niccolo Canepa, Christophe Ponsson and Santiago Barragan for a chance to get onto the first four rows of the grid.
Meanwhile, the remaining grid positions outside the top twenty have been determined, with wild-card Anucha Nakcharoensri in 21st – who brought the session to an early end after a crash -, debutant Greg Gildenhuys in 22nd, Larry Pegram 23rd, Imre Toth 24th, Ireneusz Sikora 25th and Chanon Chumjai 25th
