Davide Giugliano continued his excellent return to the World Superbike class by heading the Kawasaki duo of Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes in FP3 at Imola.
The session was also notable as Pata Honda runners Michael van der Mark and Sylvain Guintoli failed to make the top ten, meaning they will enter the first 15-minute Superpole session this afternoon.
At the front, local man Giugliano, who hasn't raced competitively since the final round of 2014 in Qatar six months ago, shot to the top of the timing sheets with a late lap of 1m 47.1s.
That marker would prove to be good enough to sit two tenths faster than Rea's Friday benchmark come the chequered flag as the Northern Irishman used the session to focus on race set up. Indeed both he and Sykes cut impressive race runs in the session that will act as a warning to those around them.
Having lamented the drop of in performance in the second half of races this year, Sykes put in a 14-lap race run in which all the laps bar three were in the 1m 47s. Rea's intentions were similar as ten of 14-lap run were in the mid-high 47s.
Chaz Davies, like Rea, was unable to better his time from Friday afternoon and sat fourth at the end of the session, while Leon Haslam remained fifth.
There were notable improvements from Ayrton Badovini and Jordi Torres, the Spaniard ending the session in seventh after coming home a disappointing 14th fastest on Friday.
Leandro Mercado built on his strong Friday afternoon showing to place eighth while David Salom's late time pushed Alex Lowes back to tenth. Like Rea and Davies, the #22 was the only other rider in the top ten unable to improve his time on Saturday morning.
Along with van der Mark (eleventh) and Guintoli (15th), Michel Fabrizio (twelfth), Matteo Baiocco (13th) and Leon Camier (14th) are a handful of the big names that will go into SP1 this afternoon.
