Leon Camier has started the British round of the 2015 World Superbike championship on top after going quickest in free practice one ahead of Tom Sykes.

Camier became the unlikely British name to top the session as the rest of the grid got up to speed at Donington Park. The MV Agusta rider narrowly snuck ahead of Sykes with a fastest lap of 1m 29.314s, just 0.035s ahead of the Kawasaki man.

The first session was halted effectively before it had begun after Niccolo Canepa's Grillini Kawasaki ZX-10R expired on his first flying run down the start/finish straight, sending the Italian skidding into the gravel pit at Redgate.

The red flags appeared to allow race marshals to check the track for any dropped oil and after it was deemed safe the session recommenced. Davies grabbed the early initiative in the opening session with a 1m 29.377s lap.

Sykes then took over at the top with his 1m 29.349s lap until Camier stormed ahead with under five minutes of the session remaining.

The injured Leon Haslam is battling on after being cleared to race this weekend and he set the seventh quickest time as Ayrton Badovini jumped ahead of him late on.

Defending champion Sylvain Guintoli ended the session as fastest Honda rider, as David Salom and Matteo Baiocco rounded out the top ten.
