WSBK Misano: Biaggi 'to have fun' with Aprilia

Max Biaggi is well aware of the difficulties facing him upon his World Superbike return for Aprilia but says he just wants to enjoy himself
Max Biaggi says he's aiming to put a smile on faces of his Aprilia team but is 'well aware of the difficulties' ahead of him in his World Superbike comeback this weekend at Misano.

The two-time World Superbike champion was finally confirmed for a wild-card comeback last week after speculation went into overdrive when the Sepang International Circuit promised 'a very special rider' was returning.

Biaggi confirmed he will contest his home Misano round and the Malaysian event in World Superbike alongside Leon Haslam and Jordi Torres for the factory Aprilia squad.

The Italian says he cannot wait to get going in front of his home fans on the Aprilia RSV4 RF but isn't anticipating the challenge to be easy.

“It is truly very exciting for me to return to racing, to taste the adrenaline of competition again, especially on a circuit as special to me as Misano,” Biaggi said. “In my work as a tester I'm helping Aprilia develop the new RSV4 RF, working very well with the guys that I know well and who by now understand me at first glance.

“The wild card is a 'cherry on the top' so to speak, a chance where I definitely plan on giving my all.

“I am also well aware of the difficulties. Our rivals are in grand form and for me it won't be easy at all.”

The 43-year-old, who won his two World Superbike titles with Aprilia in 2010 and 2012, has ruled out a specific finishing target in Misano or Sepang and wants to enjoy the thrill of racing again.

“The goal is first and foremost to have fun,” he said. “Not to predict any results, but to give 100% to bring a smile to the face of Aprilia, the fans and all enthusiasts. Sunday after race two we'll draw our conclusions.”

I wasn't making a comment about his conduct on track, but instead his ability to ride a motorcycle fast. Never heard the expression 'form is temporary, class is permanent' used to describe sportsmen? I would have thought it was entirely obvious that was what I meant given the preceding phrase was 'I think the Roman Emperor will be quick'. But I guess the lesson is never underestimate the ability of people to make silly reactionary comments when they have their own agenda against a particular rider...
