Tom Sykes began race day at Jerez in fine style as he topped the morning warm-up session from a much improved Leon Haslam.
Despite showing good pace throughout the weekend, Haslam was frustrated with a lowly eleventh place qualifying spot. The Englishman was nonetheless fast in the cooler morning temperatures and ended the session two tenths slower than Sykes.
Jonathan Rea needs just a single top ten finish to become Northern Ireland's first motorcycle world champion since 1986. Happy with his race pace on Saturday evening, Rea was third, a tenth slower than former team-mate Haslam.
Jordi Torres was fourth, one place ahead of impressive qualifier Michael van der Mark with Alex Lowes sixth.
There was incident in the session for Chaz Davies as the Welshman crashed at turn nine mid-way through the session. The Ducati man, second in the series, fell at turn nine while pushing for a time.
Although unharmed, Davies was unable to continue in the session and subsequently finished ninth.
