Alex Lowes says he is 'excited but apprehensive' for his maiden test on the Yamaha R1 as he and Sylvain Guintoli get to grips with the new bike at the team's first winter test at Jerez on 3-4 November.
The British rider has switched with Paul Denning's Crescent Racing team to become the factory-supported Yamaha squad on its highly anticipated return to the World Superbike championship in 2016.
Speaking about his opening introduction with the R1, Lowes says he is full of mixed emotions and is fully aware of the task at hand to be ready for the first race of next season at Phillip Island in February.
"I'm really excited but a little apprehensive ahead of the first test tomorrow,” Lowes said. “I'm excited as it is my first chance to get on the Yamaha YZF-R1, but a little anxious to see what the new bike is like.
“It's obviously a really exciting project but the most important thing now is to understand where we are with the bike and learn the basics of a riding a new machine - the different engine character which I've not been used to - and then from the first test just keep building up.
“It's a long time until the first race in Phillip Island at the end of February, so we have enough time to get comfy on the bike and for now it's just about having fun, learning the bike and getting up to speed with the new team and surroundings so we give ourselves the best opportunity come the start of the season."
Crescent Yamaha has confirmed it will run a 'stealth black' bike livery with Pata title-sponsorship branding during winter testing before the team's additional partners and final 'Racing Blue' livery is revealed in January.
The team also says the initial test at Jerez will purely concentrate on getting both Lowes and his new team-mate Guintoli happy riding the R1 to create a solid and comfortable base setting as the bike makes its maiden outing in WSBK regulations.
Lowes and Guintoli will both be on track for the two-day test at Jerez on the 3-4 November before switching to Aragon for a second test and then back to Jerez for a final test before the winter testing ban commences.
