Jonathan Rea says the new rear tyre Pirelli supplied for the winter test at Aragon has enabled him to make further gains alongside the new parts on the 2016 Kawasaki bike.

The reigning World Superbike champion has produced the Kawasaki Racing Team's best lap of the winter tests at Aragon with a 1m 50.3s after testing out new engine settings - focused around the engine inertia - as well as work on suspension and a new swing arm.

Rea's time compared to the qualifying times set last April when the World Superbike grid visited the Spanish circuit would have been enough to comfortably put Rea on the second row, despite the track temperature being colder at the test.

The Kawasaki rider says he was also thrilled by the new rear Pirelli tyres which the Northern Irishman felt complimented his riding style while the bike is tipped over in the corners.

"I did some back-to-back comparisons with a new rear tyre that Pirelli had brought," Rea said. "It was like an SC1 family with stronger sidewalls, which gave more stability. For me it was a big step my riding style.

"We also used the new swing arm we first used in Jerez and we reconfirmed that too. We tested engine settings with a little bit different inertia and worked with some weight distribution ideas. We also tried a different rear spring and we confirmed everything was fine."

The Kawasaki rider, who was joined at the two-day test in Aragon by his team-mate Tom Sykes as well as the factory Honda, Yamaha and Ducati teams, will now travel to Jerez for a final winter test before the testing back commences between December and mid-January.
