Schmitter steps up to WSBK with Grillini

Grillini Racing announces its first rider for the 2016 World Superbike Championship, with Dominic Schmitter stepping up from the Supersport class.
The Grillini Racing Team has announced Dominic Schmitter will lead its charge in the 2016 World Superbike Championship.

After a handful of wild-card appearances in recent years, Schmitter made his full-time international debut in 2015 as part of the Go Eleven World Supersport effort with the youngster ending the year 14th overall with a best finish of eighth position.

For 2016 however, Schmitter will progress to the World Superbike Championship competing with Grillini Racing, making him the first Swiss rider to compete since Roger Kellenberger back in 1999.

“I'm happy to be a part of Grillini Racing Team for 2016,” Schmitter says. “It is great to make this happen. I have always dreamed about being in World Superbike. I will be one of the youngest riders in the field and the first Swiss rider to do a full season.

“I know we are competing against factory teams and that it won't be easy for me to score championship points. But a race is a race and I am a fighter! I will do my maximum for the team, the sponsors and the people who believe in me. My goal is to achieve some top 15 placings and to become a permanent fixture in the World Superbike Championship. I am fully motivated and would like to thank Andrea Grillini for this opportunity.”

“I have seen Dominic racing in World Supersport and I have been impressed by his determination and by his maturity at every race,” added eponymous owner Andrea Grillini. “I think that the WorldSBK season will be very challenging for him, but I also think that his determination and his desire to do well will help him score good results.”

Having run Kawasaki and BMW machinery in recent years, Grillini is yet to specify which bike it will run 2016 amidst rumours it could purchase the ex-Crescent Racing Suzukis for its privateer effort.

Grillini Kawasaki ran Gianluca Vizziello and Alex Phillis in the latter races of the season having begun the year with Christophe Ponsson and Santiago Barragan.
