Tom Sykes has become the first World Superbike rider to duck under the 1m 40s barrier as he set lap record pace at Jerez on the concluding day of the pre-season test.

The 2013 World Superbike champion has picked up where he left off from Tuesday by leading proceedings and as times began to tumble at the end of the session Sykes set a blistering 1m 39.924s lap to lay down a marker to his Kawasaki team-mate Jonathan Rea and his other World Superbike rivals.

Aruba.it Racing Ducati's Davide Giugliano went remarkably close to pinching the unofficial lap record himself but couldn't make up a vital few hundreds of a second to catch Sykes. The Italian was evenly matched against his team-mate Chaz Davies who ended the day third quickest.

New boy Nicky Hayden will be pleased with his efforts over the two-day test as he gets to grips with unfamiliar machinery, electronics and tyres and completed the test fourth overall, one-tenth quicker than Honda Racing team-mate Michael van der Mark who rounded out the top five.

With Xavi Fores also impressing towards the end it meant defending WSBK champion Rea finished the day only seventh fastest. Despite using qualifying tyres for a final blast at the end he remained almost a full second off his team-mate Sykes.

The Pata Crescent Yamaha duo continued to get up to speed with the YZF-R1 with Sylvain Guintoli and Alex Lowes next on the timesheet, with WSBK rookies Milwaukee BMW and Josh Brookes completing the top ten, closing the gap to 1.9s on the leaders.

After Marco Melandri confirmed he wouldn't be taking a role in the MV Agusta WSBK set-up in 2016, Leon Camier's sole representation saw the Italian manufacturer 11th fastest overall as Karel Abraham and Sylvain Barrier on the Pedercini Kawasaki rounded out the WSBK entries.
