Jonathan Rea confirmed his stellar first day pace and consistency by topping the third World Superbike free practice session on Saturday morning at Phillip Island.

In a new format for 2016, FP4 is scrapped and riders only had 15 minutes of track time before Superpole takes place at lunch time.

The change means riders, like Chaz Davies, who required a substantial change in set-up overnight had a limited chance to test the tweaks for more than ten laps.

Davies acknowledged his lap times were too slow on Friday afternoon and made overnight adjustments to find more grip when he opened the throttle. The change appeared to bear fruit, as Davies got to within 0.19s of Rea's best lap of 1m 31.085s.

Michael van der Mark was 0.15s slower than Davies, with Tom Sykes, unhappy that he was unable to make a race simulation of Friday afternoon fourth fastest.

Indeed Sykes was sandwiched by both Ten Kate Hondas as Nicky Hayden placed fifth with a time that was just 0.011s slower than that of his team-mate.

Alex Lowes was the quickest of the Pata Yamaha R1s in sixth as Sylvain Guintoli, fastest on Friday afternoon, failed to complete a flying lap as technical issues kept his machine grounded in pit lane.

Eighth fastest Mike Jones was a faller at turn two while Alex de Angelis, making his return to racing after his horror-crash at Motegi four months, fell on the approach to turn ten.
