Chaz Davies says he's 'quite happy' with the progress made on his Aruba.it Racing Ducati Panigale R at Aragon and points to tyre selection as being vital for race strategy.

The Welsh rider topped the opening session as World Superbikes returned to Europe before being pipped by Tom Sykes in the afternoon by a third of a second. In the second session Davies particularly impressed with a string of consecutive hot laps which pointed to a strong race pace.

Davies says he's pleased with the gains made with his Ducati, including a new exhaust design, and is keen to continue pressing for more grip and top speed through until qualifying at the Spanish circuit.

"I'm quite happy with today's performance," Davies said. "The Panigale R was competitive right away after the tests, and we only made small adjustments to the setup. We just need to find a bit more grip. I like the new exhaust, apparently it gives us a bit more power, but we need to keep working on this area."

With cool temperatures and the Aragon track being hit by strong winds Davies is certain Pirelli tyre compound selection will be key in the races which he will concentrate on overnight.

"Given the weather conditions, tyre choice will also play a pivotal role towards the races, so we'll crunch all the data and then focus on pace," he said.

12 months ago Davies secured the Ducati Panigale R's first win in World Superbikes at the same track and will want to repeat the feat this weekend to close the gap in the championship to Kawasaki duo Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea.
