WSBK Imola, Italy: Giugliano aims ‘to hit stride’ at Imola after tricky start

Davide Giugliano is hoping to emulate his 2015 performances at Imola when he produced a phenomenal comeback from injury to reignite his campaign
Davide Giugliano is hoping to emulate his 2015 performances at Imola when he produced a phenomenal comeback from injury to reignite his campaign after a tricky run of results.

The Aruba.it Racing Ducati rider enjoyed a solid start to 2016 in Australia with a fourth and third place but since then he has failed to match those heights which has seen him lose vital ground in the World Superbike championship standings.

The Italian rider says there hasn't been an outright issue he's been struggling with and hopes he can repeat his performances from the season opener at his and Ducati's home event.

12 months ago Giugliano made his comeback from injury at Imola to grab an impressive pole position in qualifying before taking a rostrum result on his first race back, which is something the Ducati rider is keen to imitate to kick-start his season.

“I'm extremely motivated for our 'home race',” Giugliano said. “In the past couple of races, the results we scored did not mirror our potential. We don't have any particular issues to solve, we're just working hard with the whole team to help me find the best sensations on the Panigale R, and the results will ensue accordingly.

“Our fans will also give us an extra push. Last year, in Imola, I came back after being sidelined for three months and was expecting to finish within the top eight, but I managed to claim Superpole and a third place also thanks to their support and that of Ducatisti in particular.”

Giugliano will be keen to turn a corner at Imola after missing out on the opportunity at Assen two weeks ago due to the tricky weather conditions. However, an unsettled weather forecast is predicted over the race weekend but Giugliano is hoping to make the most of the chance at a track he's traditional been competitive at.

“Assen should have marked a positive turn, but the weather was too erratic and we couldn't finalise the work on the setup,” he said. “Imola is track that always suited me well, and an ideal place to help us hit our stride.”

He seems to have toned down the habit of launching himself into orbit every other race but it also seems to have taken enough edge off to mean he's miles behind Davies in most races.
