Nicky Hayden maintained his strong start to the weekend as the Honda rider ended day one at Misano at the head of the time sheets.
The American star, second fastest in FP1, lapped in 1m 35.263s to take the top spot by 0.122s from fellow WSBK rookie Markus Reiterberger on the Althea BMW.
Kawasaki's Tom Sykes slotted into third following a lap of 1m 35.388s, which left the Yorkshire rider only 0.125s back on Hayden at the Marco Simoncelli Circuit.
FP1 frontrunner Davide Giugliano (Aruba.it Ducati) slipped to ninth but the Italian ended Friday in fourth on the combined times ahead of Jordi Torres on the Althea BMW.
Chaz Davies rounded out the first six on the second of the Aruba.it Ducati machines, 0.216s back on Hayden, while Alex Lowes was a fine seventh on the Pata Yamaha R1.
Lowes missed his home round at Donington Park last time out after breaking his collarbone in Malaysia and will be eager to make amends this weekend in San Marino, where he has progressed straight to Superpole 2.
World champion Jonathan Rea also sealed safe passage to Superpole 2 but will be aiming to climb the order on his Kawasaki on Saturday after ending day one in eighth overall.
Honda's Michael van der Mark and Xavi Forés on the Barni Ducati were the top ten as they clinched the final two places in Superpole 2.
Ioda Aprilia's Lorenzo Savadori narrowly missed out on a place in Superpole 2 as the Italian rider ended Friday in 11th.
Britain's Leon Camier finished 15th on the Reparto Corse MV Agusta, one place behind Niccolo Canepa, who is standing in for the injured Sylvain Guintoli in the Pata Yamaha team.
