Davide Giugliano gave the Italian fans something to smile about as he put Saturday's disappointment behind him to finish third on the Aruba.it Ducati at Misano in race two.

Giugliano's prospects were thwarted by a crash in race one, although he managed to remount, eventually finishing the race in 14th place.

In Sunday's second race, Giugliano finished clear in third behind the Kawasaki pair of Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes to hold fourth place in the championship standings after the first eight rounds.

The Ducati rider dedicated his podium to the memory of former World Superbike rider Fabrizio Pirovano, who passed away recently.

"Yesterday was a big disappointment for us, because we had a strong pace but a crash took us out of contention," he said.

"We knew we could bounce back today, and we've made another small step forward with our set-up for Race 2. Early on, I was trying to manage the tyres because I was expecting a drop in the second half of the race, like yesterday, from Rea and Sykes. However, that didn't happen.

"Anyway, it was important for us to get back on the right track and I want to dedicate this podium to Fabrizio Pirovano and his family."
