Jonathan Rea has nipped ahead of Friday's timesheet topper Chaz Davies by just 0.024 in the short final free practice at Laguna Seca which sets up an intriguing qualifying at the iconic American circuit.
Davies, who demonstrated his dominance from last year by topping Friday's practice, was narrowly beaten by the World Superbike championship leader Rea who has found a useful few tenths in lap time overnight.
It sets up a tightly-contested qualifying at Laguna Seca with both factory Kawasaki riders closing the gap to Davies, with Tom Sykes in third just over a tenth of a second off the front two.
Davies' Aruba.it Racing Ducati team-mate Davide Giugliano grabbed fourth ahead of local star Nicky Hayden with Xavi Fores rounding out the top six.
Alex Lowes on the Pata Yamaha continued his resurgence from injury with seventh ahead of Hayden's Honda team-mate Michael van der Mark with Alex de Angelis and Jordi Torres completing the top ten.
