Tom Sykes has produced yet another flawless qualifying flyer to grab his seventh Superpole position of the season by edging out Kawasaki team-mate Jonathan Rea by 0.055s.
Despite not topping any of the free practice sessions at Laguna Seca Sykes dialled in his Kawasaki ZX-10R as the chequered flag was readied to nip ahead of Rea's provisional pole time to take his seventh pole position in nine rounds in 2016.
Sykes' blistering lap denied Rea his first pole of the year as he looks to defend his 66-point championship lead on his Kawasaki team-mate ahead of race one in a few hours time.
Aruba.it Racing Ducati's Davide Giugliano grabbed a surprise front row start having looked off the pace during practice, albeit one-third of a second off the Kawasaki pair, but beat his team-mate Chaz Davies.
The Welsh rider, who grabbed pole position and a double race victory at the iconic American track in 2015, may feel it is a missed opportunity as he starts at the head of the second row joined by Xavi Fores and local star Nicky Hayden.
Althea BMW's Jordi Torres once again impressed by grabbing seventh on the grid ahead of IodaRacing Aprilia's Lorenzo Savadori as Niccolo Canepa, who is acting as stand-in for the injured Sylvain Guintoli, pipped Pata Yamaha team-mate Alex Lowes who will start at the front of the fourth row alongside Superpole 1 graduates Michael van der Mark and Leon Camier.
